Pedodontics

Pedodontics is the branch of dentistry dealing with the care and treatment of children teeth.

Child prophylaxis

Child education starts with parent education!!!

You must know that once the newborn comes in contact with his parents, his mouth (oral cavity) will be colonised by microbes, microbes with similar caries potential as in adults.

Little ones oral health education starts even from the first days of life by making mothers aware of the importance of breast feeding, not only due to the antibodies existing in maternal milk, but also due to the benefits of milk sucking on the dento-maxillary development. Also try not to accustom the child with sweetened liquids (tea, milk, etc). On one hand, start a solid education regarding the child’s future healthy diet preventing future problems like obesity or diabetes. On the other hand, once the primary dentition has appeared, you must avoid prolonged contact of sweet and sticky food with the dental surfaces. Avoid as much as possible sweetened food (sugar, honey) and specially, do not accustom the child to fall asleep stimulated by sucking of sweetened liquids which, than will remain for hours on the dental surfaces. Note that, during sleep, the salivary secretion is diminished and these liquids will not be diluted as quickly as when the child is awake.

Dental hygiene must start with the eruption of the first temporary teeth, and in this respect you can let yourself advised by your dentist regarding the proper hygiene measures you should take.

It is indicated to familiarise early on the children with visits to the dentist, who will try through games to teach them the brushing technique according to their age, and by this will gain their trust and will be able to properly monitories them. However, the principal role in infant’s oral hygiene education is played by the parents, because the oral hygiene, regularly and conscientiously performed at home (watched and guided by the parents) will create healthy habits for the child’s whole life. Do not forget, also, to accustom early your child with good eating habits, proper for booth dental and general health. Let’s not forget the say: “One apple a day keeps the doctor away”.

Sealing of temporary and permanent teeth

In children case, specially in final dentition (but also sometimes in the temporary one) there are used methods to prevent tooth decay on the chewing surfaces of the molars. This procedure is known as pits and fissures sealing .

The first permanent teeth appear at children around the age of 6. Thus, with the jaw growing, you will observe that behind the last temporary teeth, the first definitive molars will erupt, so-called 6 years molars, which unfortunately are not yet perfectly mineralised, as the process will continue also after their appearance in the mouth. This is a delicate period during which, the masticator surface, characterized by the presence of retentive fissures and pits, can be easily affected by the carious process. Here, an important role is played by the child’s eating habits (in fact parent’s ones) and also by the individual hygiene.

To protect these delicate areas, immediately after the dental crowns’ eruption, it is indicated to seal these areas with a fluid composite material which is chemically adhering to the tooth, without the need of any kind of mechanical intervention on the enamel.

The therapy can be applied also to the other molars that will erupt at around 12 years, specially in those cases with high caries risk. Of course, in the case of high caries activity, we recommend the applying of topical substances, capable to protect the dental enamel.
